We’ll explore what Babylon represents in reggae, its historical context, and how it influences the lyrics and messages of some of the most iconic reggae songs.

1. Historical and Biblical Origins

Biblical Babylon

Originally, Babylon was an ancient city, notorious in biblical narratives for its decadence and immorality. In the Bible, Babylon is often portrayed as a place of exile and captivity, particularly for the Jews during the Babylonian captivity.

Rastafarian Interpretation

For Rastafarians, who are a significant influence on reggae culture, Babylon extends beyond its historical outline. It symbolizes a corrupt system that oppresses spiritual and physical freedom. This interpretation is heavily influenced by the Rastafarian faith’s deep roots in the Bible, particularly the books of Daniel and Revelation.
